Lesa’s Legacy is a not-for-profit medical equipment donation ministry serving Cullman County Alabama.
Our Beginning
Lesa Lang Holland Hawkins started the program as a hospice social worker after seeing a need for medical equipment from her patients in her community. Often times, people have no means of paying for or acquiring much needed equipment like hospital beds, wheelchairs, or even walkers in times of need. Lesa understood this all too well. After managing the program on her own for two years, she was informed by her new employer, Cullman Regional Medical Center, that she must shut it down for liability reasons.
Instead of giving up, Lesa turned to her father, Tommy Lang, and his Sunday School class at the First United Methodist Church of Cullman, Alabama. The “Horizon Class” welcomed her idea with open arms and began implementing steps to take over the service as a ministry for the church. In May of 2011 (two months after speaking with the class) Lesa was diagnosed with and passed away from acute lymphoblastic leukemia all in a matter of three weeks. Since that time, the "Horizon Class" at First Methodist has provided medical equipment to over 100 families a year.
Steve and Tomesa Smith along with their Sunday school class at FUMC took over the ministry in 2021, and continue to care for the community to this day.
This is Lesa's Legacy.
